The Global Land Programme (GLP) community contributed to the newly released report The Status of Land Tenure and Governance, produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Land Coalition (ILC), and CIRAD. The report provides a global synthesis of data and evidence on land tenure, land rights, and land governance, offering an important reference point for policymakers, civil society, and researchers working on land-related challenges worldwide.
GLP Science Lead Ariani Wartenberg served as lead author of Chapter 5 on customary lands, with contributions from several members of the GLP community. The chapter examines the extent and governance of customary lands globally and their importance for climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and the rights and livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
GLP’s participation reflects the programme’s commitment to strengthening connections between land system science and policy processes. Alongside supporting cutting-edge research across the community, GLP also contributes scientific expertise to global assessments and policy dialogues—helping ensure that knowledge from the land system science community informs decisions about the future of land governance and sustainability.
