About Tomas's Work
I am an agronomist and postdoctoral researcher working on how global food system dynamics shape land-use systems and sustainability outcomes. My research focuses on understanding how different roles within the global food system—such as export-oriented and import-dependent configurations—drive structural changes in land use, sectoral composition, and resource use. I combine empirical data, sector-level analysis, and comparative approaches to examine trade-offs across environmental, economic, and social dimensions, with a particular emphasis on how aggregate outcomes emerge from the interaction of different production systems. My work has so far focused on agro-exporting contexts such as Uruguay, but aims to contribute to broader questions on land-use change, telecoupling, and sustainability transitions across diverse socio-economic settings.
