About Tianren's Work

Tianren Yang serves as an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong. His interest lies in the development and application of urban analytics and predictive Simulation Modelling (ABM/Predictive/Economic modelling) techniques. He aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how cities evolve, with a particular emphasis on the dynamic influences of urban technology, planning policy and human behaviour.

Tianren holds a PhD in architecture (applied urban Simulation Modelling (ABM/Predictive/Economic modelling)) from the University of Cambridge. He earned an MSc in urban design from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and completed both an MEng in urban planning and a BEng in landscape architecture from Tongji University.

As a chartered urban planner, Tianren leverages his academic expertise in practical contexts, offering extensive consultation within the sectors of real estate and city development. He aims to translate his research insights into actionable decision-making. His professional engagements have included roles at the China Development Bank, the Boston Consulting Group, and the EPSRC Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction, where he analysed and modelled large-scale urban changes.

Throughout his career, Tianren has contributed to the development of computational models for several prominent city regions. These include Greater London and Cambridge in the UK, the Chicago Metropolitan Area in the USA, and Greater Shanghai and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei in China.
