About Somayeh's Work
Dr. Somayeh Zahabnazouri is a physical geographer and environmental scientist specializing in land degradation, fluvial, aeolian and fire geomorphology, and climate resilience in arid ecosystems. She holds a PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Tehran and a second PhD at the University of Bari Aldo Moro and Utah State University, focusing on post-fire landscape recovery and soil erosion modeling. Her work integrates Earth Observation/Remote Sensing, GIS, and environmental modeling to assess land use change, desertification, and burn severity impacts in Mediterranean and hyper-arid regions.
As the founder of Supporters of the Lut Desert, an NGO dedicated to sustainable development and cultural heritage in Iran's desert regions, Dr. Zahabnazouri bridges science with community-based conservation. She has published extensively on qanat systems, soil erosion, and environmental hazards, and actively contributes to global dialogues on resilient land systems.
Her research aligns closely with GLP's core themes of land system science, ecosystem services, and sustainable land governance.
