About Shermin's Work

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Ecology Behavior and Evolution at the University of California, San Diego (elephantresearch.net). I am interested in human-wildlife coexistence and their relationship to land-use practices past, present and future through a socioecological perspective. I am also the President and Founder of Trunks & Leaves, a conservation nonprofit based in the United States, founder and trustee of EFECT, a conservation Trust in Sri Lanka, and a member of the Asian Elephant Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission. I obtained my Ph.D in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, then completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution, the College of Life Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin and Colorado State University.
