About Shannon's Work

With a coffee in one hand and an environmental nonfiction book in the other, Shannon Bowers-Smith is a lifelong learner, community advocate, and enthusiastic change-maker. She’s currently pursuing a PhD in Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Alabama—adding another layer to an already vibrant career rooted in environmental leadership, nonprofit impact, and educational outreach.

From her early days as Phi Theta Kappa President and Model UN President to her current role as Executive Director of Girls on the Run, Shannon Bowers-Smith has always blended leadership with service. She holds an MA in Sustainable Leadership from Arizona State University, is SHRM-CP certified, GRI-trained in sustainability reporting, and is also a Starbucks Certified Coffee Master.

Her professional journey spans corporate sustainability, nonprofit leadership, logistics with Spartan Race, and talent development at Trek Bicycle. She's even a self-published children’s author, endurance athlete, and proud dog mom to Penny, Webster, Fiona, and Beauregard.

Whether she's leading environmental initiatives, coaching young leaders, or sailing the Gulf Coast, Shannon Bowers-Smith brings passion, purpose, and a knack for getting things done—with fun and sustainability.
