About Rene's Work
Dr. Rene Zamora Cristales is an Associate Professor and the Strachan Chair in Forest Operations Management in the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources & Management at Oregon State University's College of Forestry. He earned his PhD in Forest Engineering from Oregon State University in 2013, following a master's in Economics and Wood Technology from Austral University in Chile (2006) and a bachelor's in Forest Engineering from Del Valle University in Guatemala (2003). His research bridges engineering, economics, and policy to advance sustainable forestry, with particular focus on strategic and tactical forest planning, landscape restoration in the tropics, the economics and finance of carbon markets, and forest policy in developing countries. Much of his work has centered on scaling up restoration efforts across Latin America, including studies on public economic incentives and the financing of high-quality landscape restoration. He is also Coordinator of Division 3 on Forest Engineering and operations management of the International Union of Forest Research organizations (IUFRO).
