About Reinmar's Work
Dr Reinmar Seidler
Research Assistant Professor, University of Massachusetts Boston
Director of Programs, ATREE-USA
Reinmar Seidler studies the changing relationships of biodiversity conservation to economic development, especially in montane zones. He has published widely on topics ranging from disaster risk management and climate change adaptation in mountain landscapes to the institutional and policy resources required for ‘green’ development. As Director of Programs for ATREE-USA, he currently helps lead multidisciplinary research-action projects in the Indian East Himalaya, trying to understand the rapid flux of rural-urban economic linkages and their reflection in changing agricultural and forest landscapes. He holds a PhD in Environmental Biology from the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he now teaches graduate seminars on ‘Conservation Biology for the Anthropocene: Science and Practice’ and ‘Sustainability Science: Environment, Economy, Equity’, as well as an Honours College Colloquium on ‘Thinking about Climate Change’. At UMass Boston he convenes a bi-annual symposium series, ‘Dimensions of Sustainability’, designed to stimulate campus-wide discussion and debate on issues at the interface of science, policy, economics and ethics.
