Work Experience

Seyi Fabiyi is a professor of Earth Observation/Remote Sensing and GIS in the Department of Forestry and Wood Technology, Federal University of Technology, Akure. He worked as Natural Resources and Environment Specialist at the Food and Agricuture Organization of the United Nation, Senior GIS Specialist at the UNHabitat Addis Ababa Duty station and worked as a GIS Consultant on a World Bank Assisted Project –Ibadan Urban Flood management Project. He has also worked with Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as the National Expert on Earth Observation/Remote Sensing and Mapping for the UNREDD+ project. He had worked in the past with other national and International organizations such as African Regional (subnational) Institute for Geospatial Science and Technology (AFRIGIST) Ife Nigeria as professor and Director of Studies. United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) as Programme officer in charge of Population and Development in the Nigeria Country Office Abuja. He was in the university academic career for upward of 26 years. Seyi Fabiyi taught in several higher institutions in Africa such as Kampala International University, Uganda. University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Nigeria, Federal University of Technology Minna, and African Regional (subnational) Institute for Geospatial Science and technology Ife, Nigeria. He taught and supervised graduate and undergraduate students on different Geography and Environmental Management Courses and conducted researches in built and natural environments. He has served as external examiner for PhD students to University of Lagos and Federal University of Technology Minna both in Nigeria. He also served as external examiners to many academic institutions for graduate and undergraduate students.

Contributions to Knowledge

Fabiyi works focused on the complex interactions between changes in human and natural environments; while changes in natural environment influence the human habitation, anthropogenic activities also modify the natural system. Some of his works include climate change impacts on urban and rural areas and adaptation mechanisms. He has been advancing knowledge in the area of urban environmental systems analysis, ecosystem monitoring and planning for more than 32 years in lectures, public presentations, conferences and journal publications. He has over 70 publications in reputable international and national outlets. These publications expand the frontiers of knowledge in the area of urban space analysis, such as GIS and Earth Observation/Remote Sensing techniques for Peri-Urban & Urban Systems, pattern analysis, ecosystem monitoring and management.

He has contributed to Knowledge in the area of Geospatial analysis of urban environmental systems with particular applications of GIS and Earth Observation/Remote Sensing techniques. He has contributed to successful implementation of National projects and developments of National policy documents in the environment, Oil and Gas sectors. He developed the Seamless map of Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) to oil and chemical spill for Nigerian coastal areas (100 kilometers off the coast). This map has been adopted as national document for managing chemical and oil spill in Nigerian coastal waters.
