About O's Work
O Kim (Oh Seok Kim), Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at Korea University and a specialist in spatial demography and land change science. With a methodological foundation in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and machine learning, O explores the complex interplay between environmental change and societal dynamics in East Asia.
His current research agenda focuses on the spatial stratification of risk, specifically how climate change—including extreme heat and sea-level rise—disproportionately affects South Korea's aging demographic. His studies provide empirical evidence that rapid aging is a primary driver of vulnerability, particularly regarding exposure to extreme heat events. Additionally, O’s research highlights the urgency of integrated planning strategies to mitigate regional disparities in essential health resources, such as national blood supply reserves.
O previously conducted research at the Korea Environment Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Southern California and holds an M.A. in GIScience from Clark University, as well as bachelor's degrees in Geography Education and Statistics from Korea University.
