About Nicolas's Work
Nicolás Vargas-Ramírez holds a Ph.D. (2023) and a Master’s degree (2018) in Geography from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and a degree in Ecology (2012) from the Pontifical Xavierian University. He is currently a Full-Time Associate Academic Technician at the Center for Multidisciplinary Research on Chiapas and the Southern Border (CIMSUR) at UNAM and a Level I National Researcher in Mexico’s National System of Researchers. His area of specialization is the study of environmental conflicts from political and academic perspectives committed to communities and social movements fighting for environmental justice. His research has been pioneering in the development of methodologies for the community use of drones in environmental monitoring, territorial defense, and the participatory management of common goods. His work combines multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological contributions with the aim of strengthening community organizational processes through the co-production of spatial knowledge and its cartographic and audiovisual representation. He is a founding member and coordinator of the Latin American Network for the Community Use of Drones (Red LatinDron).
