Nathan Vogt

I have a Doctorate Degree (2005) in Environmental Science with a PhD Minor in Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (Interdisciplinary, Global Change Science that emerged in the late 1980s). I am currently the director of the Laboratory of the Studies of Social-Ecological Landscapes (LESP) within the Urban and Regional Planning Department of the University of the Paraíba Valley. i am also an associated researcher of the Center for the Assessment of Social-Ecological Landscapes (CASEL) at Indiana University. My research interests include how local populations adapt their resource use and management strategies in response to global changes (e.g., markets, land tenure regularization, climate change) and how these are expressed in their landscapes and well-being. Topical interests include land-use and landscape history, institutions (formal and informal) and collective action for governing ecosystems and their services, local ecological knowledge, social-ecological systems analysis, and sustainability science. My research tools include an integration of methodologies and theories from the social (e.g., individual decisions and agency, collective action) and natural sciences (e.g., ecosystem processes). These include ethnography, surveys, institutional analysis, ecosystem assessments, GIS, and remote sensing to analyze human-environment interactions in forest biomes across diverse scales and levels. I am a member of the Global Land Programme.
