About Myagmarsuren's Work

BIOGRAPHY

Dr ALTANBAGANA Myagmarsuren is head of the Division of Social-Economic Geography at the Institute for Geography and Geo-ecology (IGG), Mongolian Academy of Sciences. He received a PhD degree in Environmental Sciences from the National University of Mongolia in 2013. His doctoral research assessed the vulnerability of pastoral social-ecological systems to climatic changes in Mongolia based on an extensive fieldwork focusing on changes in sustainable livelihoods assets. 

Dr Altanbagana began his academic career in 2002 as a researcher of rangeland ecosystem at the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Ecology, National University of Mongolia and, a Regional (subnational) planning specialist at the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development since 2004 to 2008 and, Sciences secretary of the Sustainable Dryland Institute since 2008 to 2010. He was also former Head of Division of Environmental Policy Studies at the National Development Institute (NDI) under the Mongolian Academy of Sciences and the President’s Office of Mongolia since 2010 to 2016 and former General director of Khovd State University 2017. 

He has been involved in many research projects since then and published more than 40 publications, primarily on ecosystem change, vulnerability analysis of traditional livelihoods, climate change impact on socio-economic, including rural to urban migration, rural poverty and policy analysis for Regional (subnational) planning in Mongolian condition. As an emerging scientist, he has been collaborating with the leading researchers in the field of ecosystem change and sustainability of herder livelihoods such as Dr Chuluun and Dr Ojima. Also, 

His research interests are including Vulnerability of Social-Ecological system at Multi-scales, Adaptation Strategyfor Climate Changes, Studies and Policy analysis for Sustainable Development Vision, Regional (subnational) Development and Human Settlements in Mongolia, and Systems Analysis for Policy-making. 

Dr Altanbagana has been a one of lead investigators of the project on assessing the implementation of the comprehensive Sustainable Development Vision 2030 of Mongolia based on the SDGs of UN. The Sustainable Development Vision 2030 of Mongolia was approved by the Parliament of Mongolia in 2016. 

He has been developing the method for Vulnerability Assessment to Climate changes on Mongolian condition by multidisciplinary indexes. He led a research project on assessing the vulnerability of Environmental and Social system, including 20 indicators at local area and a project on develop a Policy Recommendation for Green Development based on sciences results of this project in 2015 and funded by Ministry of Green Development and Environment. Dr Altanbagana has led or been involved in applied research such as consultancy service to UNDP to conduct sum-level capacity assessments to implement ecosystem adaptation and to local provinces to develop the province’s development policy. 

Now, he is leading one Basic research project that is “Re-Development the Integrated Basis Method for Regional (subnational) Development Concept of Mongolia” in 2019 to 2020 and it was approved by Foundation of Sciences and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sciences and Sports of Mongolia.
