About Monica's Work

Monica Dumitrascu - senior researcher and deputy director of the Institute of Geography. The main research activities are in field of environmental change, GIS and protected areas. Her main scientific fields of interest are related to environmental geography, Regional (subnational) and local impact of global environmental changes; land use/land cover changes; protected areas; climate hazards; community-oriented raising awareness and dissemination activities etc. The PhD topic was related to landscape changes and effect of climate changes in the southern part of Romanian Plain (Les modifications du paysage dans la Plaine de l’Olténie. Roumanie) and was elaborated within the University of Bucharest and Université de Provence, Aix-Marseille I, France. She published over 200 publications on landscape change and environment issues in Romania. She coordinated and supervised several national and international level research projects and grants. Since 2018 she is a PhD supervisor within the doctoral school of the Romanian Academy. She is Chair of International Geographical Union Commission on Land Use/Cover Change, member of the national committee on climate change adaptation and national committee drought and desertification mitigation, UN expert on Geographical Names (member of UNGEGN); member of National Commission for the Protection of Natural Monuments, Romanian Academy.
