About Markus's Work
Markus Giger is Associated Senior Research Scientistat the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) of the University of Berne, in Switzerland. He has studied agricultural economics at the ETH Zurich and has a PhD in Geography from the University of Bern. Before joining the CDE he has been working for the International Labour Office in Indonesia and the FAO in Rome.
Markus Giger is currently part of CDE's Sustainability Governance Cluster. He has been involved in several projects that relate to international land acquisitions, amongst them the Land Matrix Initiative. He is the co-author of several scientific papers dealing with international land acquisitions, and their impacts on livelihoods, poverty and sustainability. Furthermore, as the Swiss Science and Technology Correspondent he is following up and regularly participating at UNCCD COPs since 2009.
