About Marjanneke's Work

Dr. Marjanneke Vijge is a postdoctoral researcher with a Niels Stensen Fellowship. Her research analyses the effects of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Myanmar, focusing on civil society empowerment, the challenges of institutionalising the EITI within the government, and frameworks to assess and address adverse social and environmental impacts of the extractive industries sector. Marjanneke is based in Yangon and works in collaboration with the Myanmar Centre for Economic and Social Development (CESD) and the UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative. Besides her research on the EITI, she is involved in a number of collaborative projects to assess the impacts of legal and illegal mining in Myanmar and provide policy recommendations on how to govern the sector. During her post-doc, she gained particular expertise and experience in (managing) multi-stakeholder processes. Prior to her postdoc, Marjanneke did her PhD with the Environmental Policy Group at Wageningen University, studying the consequences of REDD+ for multilevel forest governance. She wrote numerous articles on international REDD+ politics, national policy developments, and the first REDD+ pilot project in India.
