About María's Work

María did her PhD at the Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología (Spain) analysing ecological and social interactions along ecosystem services flows and graduated in 2015 (Cum laude). She worked as a synthesis postdoc for the Biodiversity Exploratories project at the University of Bern (Switzerland) from 2015 to 2018, where she was investigating land management intensification effects on multiple ecosystem services in forests and grasslands. From 2018-2022, she was Senior Scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ and German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) in Leipzig (Germany), where she contributed to telecoupling studies, supply-demand mismatches in social-ecological systems, and inequalities in the access and distribution of ecosystem services. Since 2023 she is back to IPE-CSIC in Jaca (Spain) leading a team on social-ecological interactions.

Research interest

My research seeks to understand the drivers and consequences of social-ecological interactions and its various implications on sustainability, mainly on ecosystem services flows and on equity in the access to those services. In particular, I investigate the effect of land use intensification on the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem services, on the synergies and trade-offs between services, and on the social relationships between actors. I analyse these relationships at multiple spatial scales and model social-ecological scenarios to inform land management and restoration policies.
