About Kareem's Work

Buyana Kareem is a sociologist and interdisciplinary researcher, currently
affiliated to Makerere University, Uganda.
His interdisciplinary research profile borders on urban experimentation of climate adaptation, alternative livelihood options and cleaner energy solutions, while examining the intricate relationship between urban growth challenges and opportunities in cities and globally. He has collaborated on science and societal impact projects in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and beyond. He worked with organized groups from urban informal settlements in Kampala, Nairobi and Stellenbosch on recycling organic waste into alternative clean cooking fuels, as an experiment towards emission reduction, affordable and inclusive urban life. Kareem has a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University, California USA, while his Masters and BA in Social Sciences are from Makerere University Uganda. He did his post-doctoral training at the Center for Sustainability Transitions (CST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
