Among the scientific-technical achievements obtained, highlight the following: i) the ecological, silvicultural and xilological characterization of different species of native hardwoods of the northwest of Iberian Peninsula and the study of the ecosystem services obtained in these natural forests; ii) research the role of the Natural Protected Areas and the conservation of the landscape in the rural development of the local populations; iii) the study of the physical-mechanical aptitude of the wood of different species, mainly of the Quercus genus, of interest for the wine industry, as well as the use of these species in the aging of wines and whiskey. The last point is the signing of a research agreement with the company Irish Distillers of the Pernod Ricard Group. Our current scientific and technical interests, and objectives in the short term, consist in the consolidation of this agreement, since the aforementioned business group is very interested in developing a line of research on the certification of the forest management of the Galician oak forests, as well as the Chain of Custody for obtaining staves used in the manufacture of barrels. These lines of research have been developed, and are still valid today, thanks also to different research projects obtained in competitive calls. Our idea is to continue along this pathway trying to advance towards the achievement of European projects, in order to make our research more visible internationally. Therefore, contacts with other research groups from different countries, not only Europeans, are a constant in our group.
