About Ifeoluwa's Work
Dr. Ifeoluwa Adebowale Balogun is an Associate Professor at the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria. Also, He is the current Deputy Director of the West African School on Climate and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), Doctoral Research Programme in West African Climate Systems (DRP-WACS), fully funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
He is an applied meteorologist with expertise in urban climate, biometeorology, environmental management and climate change. He has specific interest in monitoring, assessing and quantifying urbanisation impacts and associated landuse landcover changes on local climate, air quality and bioclimatological comfort of cities. His research interest also includes climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation with a broad view on conservation mechanisms. He has participated in several field experiments at home and abroad. His current research involves understanding the role of cities in modifying weather, climate, air quality and quality of life of inhabitants (man, animal, plants and organisms); and also suggesting how such research may be usefully employed at various scales of management by environmentalists, planners and decision / policy makers. He has authored and co-authored several publications on these issues in reputable local and international journals and has served as reviewer of articles in many journals
He had Bachelors degree in Meteorology in 2000, Masters in Applied Meteorology in 2004 and PhD in Meteorology with specialisation in Urban Climate, Biometeorology and Air Quality in 2012. During his PhD research, he attended short courses and obtained certificates in Environmental Research at the GKSS School on Environmental Research in Lunenburg, Germany in 2007; and on African Weather and Climate from National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado, USA in 2011.
He has attended several national and international scientific fora where he presented scientific research papers across continents. Some of his scientific credit are the travel awards to attend the GKSS school on Environmental Research, Luneburg Germany in 2007; World Meteorology Organisation (WMO) travel award to Yokohama, Japan in 2009; the William P. Lowry Award for Best African Graduate Student presented to him at the 7th international Conference on Urban Climate (ICUC-7) in Yokoahama, Japan 2009; the joint American Meteorological Society (AMS) and International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC) Lowry Award for the scientific and aesthetic quality of his work and presentations at the 8th international Conference on Urban Climate (ICUC-8) at Dublin, Ireland 2012. He also won the National Centre for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Colorado colloquium award to attend School of African weather and Climate in USA in 2011. He is a member of several scientific associations and professional bodies among which are; Nigeria Meteorological Society (NMetS), International Association for Urban Climate (IAUC), African Fire Networks (Afrifirenet), Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG) and Science Association of Nigeria (SAN).
