About Dr. Fikre Belay's Work
Dr. Fikre Belay Tekulu is an Associate Professor in Urban and Regional Planning at Adigrat University, Ethiopia. He is an experienced academic, researcher, and educator specializing in urban and regional development, spatial planning, environmental management, climate resilience, and post-conflict recovery.
Dr. Fikre holds a PhD in Urban and Regional Development Planning from Punjabi University, India, an MA in Urban Management from the Ethiopian Civil Service University, and a BEd in Geography from Mekelle University. His interdisciplinary academic background combines urban planning, geography, environmental studies, and development planning.
His research interests include urbanization and urban development, urban and regional planning, environmental management, climate-smart and resilient development, ecosystem restoration, post-conflict recovery, urban flood risk management, sustainable livelihoods, food security, and the social and spatial impacts of conflict. He has conducted research using quantitative and qualitative approaches and has experience with statistical and spatial analysis tools, including SPSS, Stata, and ArcGIS.
As an academic, Dr. Fikre contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, student supervision, curriculum development, academic program review, and research activities. He has also been involved in research addressing the effects of conflict on education, health services, urban services, livelihoods, and environmental management in Tigray.
His current research agenda emphasizes building resilient landscapes and secure cities in conflict-affected areas, particularly through climate-smart catchment rehabilitation, ecosystem restoration, resilient livelihoods, urban green infrastructure, flood-risk reduction, and community-based environmental governance.
Dr. Fikre has published and developed research on urbanization trends, post-conflict urban and environmental challenges, education and health service disruptions, and sustainable urban development. His work aims to generate evidence that can support effective planning, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and inclusive regional development in Ethiopia and other conflict-affected contexts.
He is committed to advancing evidence-based urban and regional planning, interdisciplinary research, higher education, and sustainable development, while contributing to the reconstruction and long-term resilience of communities affected by conflict and climate-related challenges.
