About CHANDRASHEKARA's Work
The initial stage of my career started as a scientist (Agronomy) in AICRP ON COTTON and developed 7 technologies for enhancing productivity in cotton with the use of growth hormone (NAA) at the flowering stage, by sowing at the optimum time, integrated nutrient management with all the available nutrient sources (FYM, Vermicompost, Biofertilizers and Green manuring or cotton or maize crop residues) and control of weeds at right time with appropriate herbicides. Further, drip irrigation scheduling, planting pattern, and fertigation technologies were developed to achieve maximum yields. Later I was promoted as a senior scientist (Agronomy) in AICRP on MAIZE, in which 5 new technologies were developed to enhance the productivity of maize by planting at a high density (88,888 plants/ha), integrating nutrients through in situ green manuring of sun hemp/fodder cowpea, Intercropping of soybean with maize, efficient N scheduling in irrigated maize (5 splits) and balanced fertilizer by enhancing the potassium and reduction of phosphatic fertilizer application rates in Maize. Technologies on irrigated organic cultivation of soybean and maize were also developed and then the responsibility of the mega RKVY sponsored project on Jaggery, Where, I established two organic jaggery technology parks at Mudhol and Sankeshwar by the integration of all the technologies developed in India and elsewhere with 20 and 10 tons of sugarcane crushing /day. The unit consists of food-grade stainless steel utensils and a hygienic jaggery production system. Technologies were developed on organic sugarcane cultivation and jaggery production demonstrated to farmers and disseminated through various media. Drip irrigation scheduling, planting pattern, and fertigation of sugarcane for enhancing productivity were developed and disseminated. I had a collaboration in the release of 3 maize hybrids, 4 wheat, and 6 sugarcane varieties by working on agronomic requirements of the crops. Through the outcomes and results of my research, 7 new technologies were introduced as new chapters in the package of practices for higher yields of UAS Dharwad. So far 26 research projects were handled by me with an outlay of Rs. 1750 lakhs.
