About Burak's Work
I am an urban scientist and human-environment geographer. My research focuses on how urbanization interacts with broader socio-economic and biophysical changes across space and over time. I use various theoretical frameworks and methodologies, in particular, systems analysis and geospatial analysis. I served as a coordinating lead author for the United Nations Cities and Biodiversity Outlook, the first comprehensive global assessment of the links between urbanization, biodiversity, and ecosystems. I have also participated as editor, lead or contributing author to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services as well as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report and 6th Assessment Reports. Since 2014, I have been a member of the World Commission on Protected Areas of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
