Peng Li is Associate Professor at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resource Research (IGSNRR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). His research centers on forest loss, swidden transition and plantations expansion in the tropics, active fires occurrence and development, and border geography and geo-economic cooperation, using the methods and/or techniques such as field survey, remote sensing and GIS. Dr. Li has developed new algorithms to map swidden agriculture in montane mainland Southeast Asia (MSEA) and modified vegetation-moisture indices (VMIs) based algorithms for mapping rubber plantations in MSEA and rice cropping systems in Southern China. He has also revealed the differences in acquisition probabilities of Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery in MSEA and China. His current research interests focus on 1) the evolution of shifting cultivation and its roles in tropical forest change and plantation expansion and 2) the interplay of geo-economic cooperation and border land use.
