Damien "Nakoa"
Farrant
PhD Student
UCSB Bren School
Nakoa Farrant is a PhD student in the Larsen Lab that focuses on agriculture, land use, and environmental health at UC Santa Barbara's Bren School. Nakoa leverages remotely sensed data to study revegetation patterns on abandoned agricultural land located in different environmental contexts. With this enhanced understanding of the drivers of succession on abandoned fields, he hopes to guide land management strategies across a range of priorites including conservation, carbon storage, and food security. Much of his work focuses on abandoned land in Hawai‘i but believes that studying abandonment across the steep environmental gradients there will lead to findings that are broadly applicable.
