I am an Associate Professor of Geography and Natural Resource Management at Addis Ababa University. I have about 25 years of research, teaching and leadership experience at higher learning institutions in Ethiopia since 1997; first at Dilla University, Ethiopia (1997-2014), then at Addis Ababa University (AAU) (College of Development Studies) and currently at Water and Land Resource Center of Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. So far, I have supervised/co-supervised more than one hundred MSc and eight (completed) and seven (on progress) PhD research in broader fields of land resource management including watershed management, climate change adaptation, land use and land cover change, food security studies and soil and water conservation. I served as PhD and MSc examination board member for large number of theses and dissertations at Addis Ababa University, Hawassa University, Haremaya University, Dilla University, University of South Africa. And Arba Minch University. To date, I authored and co-authored more than 55 research articles and book chapters and large number of unpublished research reports.
I am/have been involved in many inter-disciplinary research projects, which I also coordinated some of them. Some of them include: Sustainable Land Management – Knowledge Management Information System (a project supported by Ministry of Agriculture and WB- 202019- to present); Sustainable Utilization and Conservation through Compensation for Ecosystem Services in Tekeze Basin (SUCCESS), Ethiopia, which is supported by EU (2020 to present); “Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub”, a project started in 2019 with Newcastle University; “Developing and Managing the Knowledge Base for the Natural Resources (NR) and Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in Ethiopia”, which is supported by the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resource Management with a financial support from World Bank; “A Decision-Analytic Framework to explore the Water-Energy-Food Nexus (DAFNE) in Complex and Transboundary Water Resources Systems of Fast Growing Developing Countries”, a project run by a consortium of European and African Universities and Research Institutes with grant by EU; “Ethiopian Learning Landscapes and Actors’ Dialogue”, a project supported by NORAD, Norway and jointly conducted by Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC) and EcoAgriculture Partners (USA); “Investment for Watershed Services”, a project funded by Forest Trends and SDC (Switzerland); “Integrated Landscape Management for Upper Sululta Watershed”, a project supported by Nestlé Waters Ethiopia.
I am/was involved in a number of academic leaderships. Some of them include: Head, Natural Resource Governance and Socio-economic Research Division of WLRC, AAU (2015- to date); Chair of the Centre for Food Security Studies, AAU (Aug 2014-July 2015); Director for Research and Community Services at Dilla University (Oct 2010-Feb 2014), and Planning Officer of Dilla University (2007-2010).
