Marthe Derkzen is a researcher in the International Development Studies group at the Dept. of Human Geography and Planning of Utrecht University. She is the coordinator of LANDac - The Netherlands Land Academy, a partnership for equitable and sustainable land governance funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Marthe's research focuses on (peri-)urban development, ecosystem restoration and stewardship of the commons in the context of social justice and climate change. She published on quantification and valuation methods for urban ecosystem services and worked with the municipality of Rotterdam exploring public views of nature-based solutions for urban climate adaptation. In Bangalore she studied how rapid urbanization and environmental change affect the ways in which low-income communities use and rely on lake ecosystems. Earlier, Marthe worked on impacts of oil palm plantations on village communities and protected areas in Sumatra, Indonesia and on urban park use in diverse neighborhoods of São Paulo, Brazil.
