He is a Professor at the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has been the Secretary General of Chinese Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) since 2006 and Secretary General of Global Dryland Ecosystem Programme since 2018. His expertise lies in the area of ecosystem service, management and policy advocacy. His research is primarily focussed on the ecosystem biogeochemical cycle, ecosystem conservation and sustainable use, and biodiversity assessment. Dr Yu published more than 100 peer reviewed scientific papers and 25 monographs.
